FAQ

1. Will this fit my van?

This LSD will fit both 2500 (single rear wheel) and 3500 (dual rear wheel) T1N Sprinters with a 1: 3.727 ratio. You can find this information on the top right corner of the data plate riveted to the rear of the your rear axle, near the differential cover. MOST 2500 and MANY 3500 T1N Sprinters in the US have this gear ratio. It is up to YOU to check!

2. Can I install the LSD myself?

We HIGHLY RECOMMEND you have the LSD installed by a shop that rebuilds axles as this is not a DIY/backyard friendly job (not even Joel wanted to do this himself and reached out to a local 4X4 shop familiar with axle rebuilding to do this job for him).

3. How does a LSD differ from my stock differential (aka "open differential")?

If you have ever been stuck in sand or mud or wet grass or snow in your sprinter, you probably noticed that one rear wheel was spinning freely while the other one (which was on a more solid surface) wasn't moving. A Limited Slip Differential will work to send more power to the wheel that is not spinning and therefore help you get out of being stuck. There are many good videos on YouTube covering this subject if you want to learn more about Limited Slip Differentials.

4. Is an LSD the same as a "locker"?

No. A locker is a much more aggressive, off roading tool used to lock the rear axle so both wheels spin at the exact same speed with -zero- slip. And LSD allows a "limited" amount of slip between the two wheels.

5. How do I turn it on?

It's ALWAYS active. You cannot turn it on or off.

6. Will it wear out my tires/change the way my van drives in normal conditions?

NO. The beauty of this LSD is that you really won't notice anything different in the way your van drives or handles except you'll find yourself getting stuck less often if you choose to take a more slippery route.

7. My van is very heavy/ I regularly haul/tow heavy loads. Is this LSD heavy duty enough for me?

YES! Joel has his LSD installed in the rear axle of his Long, Tall 3500 passenger van that he loads up with all of his kids and tows a 5000 LB travel trailer with, going up and down the East Coast and he's even been known to venture over to the West Coast with this setup. The Quaife LSD is a stout, robust unit that has served him faithfully.

8. Can I still get stuck in the mud/snow/sand with an LSD?

YES. While this LSD can help keep you from getting stuck in many low traction situations, it is not the same as a locker/4X4/AWD etc and must not be seen as such. It is the closest/easiest "bolt on" product for our 2WD Sprinters to improve traction and drivability in slippery conditions, but it's not a "magic wand" that will keep you and your Sprinter from -ever- getting stuck.
